UUP councillors meet Shorts management
Ulster Unionist councillors have met with senior members of Shorts to discuss the impending jobs losses at the manufacturing firms Belfastbase.
Bombardier vice-president Michael Ryan is believed to have told Sir Reg Empey and Jim Rodgers that the shedding of 1,050 jobs announced last week could be avoided if staff accepted a negotiated contract renewal proposal from management.
The proposal was rejected in a recent ballot result, prompting bosses to come up with an accelerated redundancy programme.
Mr Rodgers described the situation at Shorts as "very serious" but said that the future of jobs was is in the hands of the Shorts workforce.
"We would hope that they decide to rescind their decision," he said.
Bombardier, one of Canada's leading industrial groups, is Northern Ireland's largest manufacturing employer. It is also the world's third largest civil aviation manufacturer and a leading maker of regional jets.
