£130,000 Roads Scheme For Craigavon

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has announced the start of a £130,000 road improvement scheme in Craigavon, Co Down.

Approximately 470 metres of the Brownlow Road, between Roundabouts D and E in central Craigavon will be resurfaced as part of the programme. The works will also include the resurfacing of Roundabout E, Minister Kennedy confirmed.

As a result of the scheme, it will be necessary to close this portion of Brownlow Road from Monday 20 January until Tuesday 4 February.

While the works are in progress, traffic will be diverted via Knockmenagh Road, Mandeville Road, Lake Road, Drumgor Road and Moyraverty West Road. These roads will be clearly signed for the assistance of the public.

£1,000 Fine For Newtownabbey Car Trader

A Newtownabbey car trader has been fined £1,000 at Belfast Magistrates' Court.

In a case brought by the Trading Standards Service of the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment, Mark Batsford, who is from Newtownabbey, pleaded guilty to seven charges under the Consumer Protection From Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 for operating as a "hidden car trader" and failing to disclose that cars for sale were category C or D insurance losses.

In May 2012, Trading Standards began an investigation into Mr Batsford's trading activities and found that he had placed a large number of adverts for cars and vans without declaring that he was a car dealer. The adverts also failed to declare that some of the cars were Category C or D insurance losses. In one case he falsely stated that a car was "HPI Clear".

Under the Consumer Protection From Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, traders commit a criminal offence if they mislead consumers about goods offered for sale.

Kennedy Praises Staff Efforts During Tidal Surge

Transport Minister Danny Kennedy has praised the hard work of all agencies involved in the operation to protect the public and vital infrastructure during the recent tidal surges.

The Minister was speaking as he visited the A2 Whitechurch Road in Ballywalter where a 40-metre section of the road had collapsed after being undermined by large and powerful waves that battered NI's coastline over the last four days.

Minister Kennedy said: "Whilst we are all grateful that the tidal surges were not as severe as expected, the last few days have been very challenging for the public and agencies involved.

"My Department's Roads Service supplied over 20,000 sandbags across the coastal areas of counties Down, Londonderry and Antrim as well as in Belfast. This was a major exercise aimed at protecting infrastructure and enabling councils to help homeowners in the at risk areas.

"Departmental staff worked tirelessly from Thursday lunchtime right through the weekend as part of the multiagency response involving the PSNI, NI Fire and Rescue Service, Rivers Agency, NI Water, local councils and many other agencies. I want to thank all of those who worked so hard and in very difficult conditions to protect us."
