Endometriosis Symposium Held At Queen's
A symposium on a common yet serious condition called endometriosis was held at Queen's University Belfast today.
The condition leads to tissue that behaves like the lining of the womb (the endometrium) being found outside the womb.
The pieces of tissue are most commonly found on the ovaries, on the lining of the pelvis behind the uterus and covering the top of the vagina.
The condition is estimated to affect around two million women in the UK. Most are diagnosed between the ages of 25 and 40.
Endometriosis can cause painful or 'heavy' periods, as well as pain in the lower abdomen, pelvis or lower back and fertility problems. It can also contribute towards a lack of energy and depression.
Symptoms can vary significantly and some women have few symptoms or no symptoms at all.
It is estimated that between 10 and 50% of women may have some degree of endometriosis.
Speaking about the event at Queen’s University, which was organised by the Pain Alliance of Northern Ireland, Health Minister Edwin Poots said: "To say that endometriosis is a common condition is by no means meant to imply that the detrimental effect on women’s health and enjoyment of life is not serious. The condition can have severe consequences which can have a profound impact on a sufferer’s quality of life. Indeed, the fact there are so many highly experienced medical specialists present at the symposium tonight is reflective of how important an issue this has become.
"Although endometriosis remains an incurable condition there are options available for its effective management; but we should also consider what can be done to improve on the work being done to address the problem of endometriosis on a regional level. It is for this reason that we are gathered here tonight, to learn about how an endometriosis network might benefit sufferers of the condition in Northern Ireland."
