'Wee Oscar' Blood Transfusion Session Hailed
A blood transfusion session in honour of 'Wee Oscar' Knox has been hailed as a success by Belfast City Council.
Belfast Lord Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir opened up the doors of Belfast City Hall yesterday to welcome the Northern Ireland Blood Transfusion Service for a special day of blood donations.
City Councillors had unanimously voted to back a motion put forward by Councillor Tierna Cunningham to host the session in honour five-year-old Oscar Knox, who is battling cancer and has already received multiple transfusions.
Oscar’s parents Stephen and Leona personally attended the session to thank everyone who supported the event.
The NI Blood Transfusion said over 400 people attended the event, with 187 donating, including 112 for first time.
A statement from the Oscar Knox Appeal said: "We are entirely overwhelmed and delighted by the numbers of people who turned up, and the length of time some waited to make their donation.
"Some people found out they were ineligible to donate today, others ineligible for life, and were incredibly disappointed. Please do not be disheartened! By even trying to make a donation you have done more than most people, and if you can convince two other people to become blood donors on your behalf then you will be doing more than your fair share to increase donor numbers here."

Patients warned after blood donor's CJD diagnosis
There are concerns that a small number of haemophiliacs in Northern Ireland and Scotland may have received blood products from a donor who later was diagnosed with variant Creutzfeld-Jacob disease (vCJD). Health agencies in Scotland have written to patients warning them that they may have been given treatments derived from the donor's blood.

A special 'Summer Essentials' initiative has just been launched targeting NI people and encouraging them to give blood. The Minister for Health, Social Services and Public Safety Bairbre de Brún, has welcomed the launch of a BloodMobile – a new purpose built mobile blood donation unit. Costing more than £170,000 the new state of the art BloodMobile contains reception, waiting, interview, and blood donation areas as well as donor refreshment, and rest rooms.
