Consultation Launched On Economic Inactivity
A public consultation on a new strategic framework to tackle economic inactivity in Northern Ireland has been launched.
Employment and Learning Minister Dr Stephen Farry and Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster launched the joint proposal yesterday.
Economic inactivity refers to those people neither in work nor unemployed.
Northern Ireland currently has the highest rate of economic inactivity in the UK at 27.4%.
Minister Farry said: "The strategic framework is focused around several key themes, from increasing engagement and support for individuals to access government services more easily, to increasing job opportunities, addressing wider barriers and helping break the cycle of inactivity by doing more to help those most at risk of disengaging from the labour market.
"High levels of economic inactivity have been a persistent feature of our local economy for over 30 years and we need to work collaboratively and smarter to tackle the problem and to help support individuals back into the labour market.
"I would therefore strongly encourage all interested parties to take this opportunity to read the strategic framework and the consultation document and submit your thoughts and proposals to us. The consultation will run for 12 weeks until 17 April 2014 and the findings from the consultation period will be integral in shaping the final strategy, including its implementation, delivery and management."

Latest Labour Force Survey Shows Fall In Employment Rate
The latest figures from the Labour Force Survey have revealed that the employment rate fell by 1.3% over the year to August 2017. The Survey, from Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency, also revealed that the economic inactivity rate (27.8%) increased by 1.5% over the year.

Unemployment Still Rising
The latest labour market statistics have been released with news that NI had 59,000 registered unemployed people in March - an increase of 100 on the previous month. This latest monthly increase was the fourth largest in the 12 UK regions. Over the past year, the jobless total here has risen by 3,300 - an increase of 5.9%.

North-South Ministers Target Infrastructure
A delegation of Irish ministers met in Dublin this week to discuss further cross-border cooperation on infrastructural projects. Stormont Roads Minister Conor Murphy, along with NI Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster, held talks with the Republic's counterpart Tánaiste Mary Coughlan at Dublin Castle on Wednesday.
