Banned 'Bible' Play To Sell Out
A play about the Bible that was cancelled and then reinstated in Co Antrim is on the verge of selling out.
Initially the play – The Bible: The Complete Word of God (Abridged) – had only sold 150 of its 800 seating allocation. However, following the controversy last week, Newtownabbey's Theatre at the Mill venue has said there are only two tickets left.
In fact, demand for the tickets was so strong that the box office extended its opening hours on Tuesday, while its website crashed due to the demand of people trying to buy tickets. On Tuesday evening, the venue confirmed that the play's two-night run is almost sold out. It said that Thursday's performance (30 January) is sold out, while only two tickets remain for tonight's opening show.
Last week, it was revealed that the play had been cancelled by Newtownabbey Borough Council's artistic board after some Councillors complained that it was blasphemous. The decision sparked controversy among NI's political parties and further afield and on Monday, the council did a u-turn on its decision, allowing the play to go ahead.
The Reduced Shakespeare Company, which is performing the show, had arrived in Northern Ireland earlier this week and was rehearsing the play before the council reserved its decision.
