Man Charged With GBH Of Baby Girl

A man has appeared in court charged with causing grievous bodily harm of a baby.

The baby girl, understood to be the man's three-month-old daughter, was admitted to Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital on Wednesday. She remains in a critical condition.

The 23-year-old man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Craigavon Magistrates' Court earlier on Friday as the details of his case were outlined.

It has been reported that the child was injured in a house in the Twinbrook area of the city earlier this week. The accused is understood to have been left alone with the baby on Wednesday morning when he had found her in medical distress. A lawyer for the 23-year-old said the accused had "taken actions" to try to help her. He later admitted to hospital staff that this had included shaking the little girl. On this news, staff made a decision to call police and the man was arrested.

Despite objections by police, the judge granted bail, explaining that the accused had already been granted compassionate bail to visit his daughter in the hospital.

The judge added that the initial charge of grievous bodily harm with intent, had been reduced to grievous bodily harm.

The accused is to appear in court again later this month.
