NI Car Registrations Continue To Grow
The number of new drivers and new car registrations in Northern Ireland continues to grow, according to figures released by the Department of the Environment (DOE).
Over 8,600 new cars were registered during the last quarter of 2013, indicating an increase of 20% on the same period in 2012 and the highest figure recorded for the quarter since 2009.
This increase also applies to all vehicles, with over 21,000 registered during the quarter to December 2013, up by 23% on the same quarter for 2012.
There were over 14,800 Theory Tests conducted during the quarter to December 2013, representing an increase of approximately 9.5% on the same period in 2012, when approximately 13,500 Theory Tests were conducted.
But these increases in first time registrations and theory tests contrast with falling numbers taking their practical driving test.
During the latest quarter, the DVA conducted over 12,700 practical driving tests, around 9% lower than the same quarter in 2012, which stood at over 13,900.
Falling numbers of practical driving tests is indicative of the drop in driving test applications, which similarly fell by over 11% during the quarter.
The practical driving test pass rate for private cars for the quarter stood at 56.6%, a small increase of less than 1% compared with the 55.9% observed in the same quarter in 2012.
Over 231,000 full and repeat MOT tests were carried out during the quarter, which is up by over 3% compared to the corresponding quarter in 2012. Approximately four in every five MOT tests (79.8%) resulted in a pass.

Pedestrian Injured In Belfast Hit-and-Run
The PSNI have issued an appeal for information following a hit-and-run incident in the Botanic Avenue area of Belfast in the early hours of Thursday morning. Officers were called to the scene shortly before 1.30am after a male pedestrian was struck by a maroon Mazda. Despite being injured, the pedestrian left the area before police arrived.

Work Underway For Free Hospital Parking In Northern Ireland
Work has begun at several hospital sites across Northern Ireland as part of the preparations for the introduction of free car parking in May 2026. Health and Social Care Trusts have been actively preparing for the implementation of a new traffic management system since the Hospital Parking Charges Act was passed in 2022.
