£70,000 funding has been allocated to support energy saving measures at Creggan Country Park in L'Derry.

Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland announced the funding to upgrade the existing heating system.

Creggan Country Park is a social economy business that has developed a green space on the northern outskirts of L'Derry. The Park runs a programme of outdoor activities that encourage active lifestyle.

Announcing the funding, Minister McCausland said: "This funding will be used to upgrade the heating system in the Park's main building making it fit for purpose. This will promote enhanced economic and environmental sustainability by reducing energy and running costs and reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Creggan Country Park are committed to maintaining the environment through the use of sustainable practices and renewable energy technologies."

Gerry Quinn, Manager of Creggan Country Park said: "Creggan Country Park warmly welcomes the Department's support for this sustainability project which will promote energy efficiency and enhance long term sustainability. We are committed to environmental and economic sustainability with an eco friendly building incorporating a turf roof.

"This project will enhance the environmental and economic sustainability of the building and will provide an exemplar for the use of renewable energy technologies."
