Ombudsman To Review PSNI Paddy's Day Video
The Police Ombudsman is to launch an investigation after a video was posted online of two officers moving an apparently incapacitated woman into a bus lane at the side of the road and leaving her there.
The video, thought to have been filmed on John Street in L'Derry on Monday, St Patrick's Day, shows the two PSNI officers moving the woman from the middle lane of the road into the bus lane, before getting into a car and driving off.
The video was filmed by a member of the public and posted online.
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness tweeted this morning: "Viewed video showing 2 police officers failing to ensure the safety of an incapacitated woman on a public roadway - totally unacceptable."
A statement from the Police Ombudsman said: "The Police Ombudsman has this morning viewed video footage which appears to show what happens after two police officers discover a young woman lying on the road in Derry/Londonderry. Dr Maguire has now initiated an independent investigation into the police handling of the investigation.
"Anyone who saw what happened is asked to contact the Police Ombudsman Freephone Witness Appeal Line on 0800 032 7880."
A statement from the PSNI said: "Any conduct, whether on or off duty, which brings discredit on the Police Service will be investigated.
"This matter has been referred to the Police Ombudsman and we will fully support their investigation."
