Waste Processing Plant Abandoned
A new major waste processing plant planned for the north east has been shelved, it has been revealed.
The Joint Committee of the North West Regional Waste Management Group (NWRWMG) yesterday recommended to their councils that they abandon their procurement of the new development.
The gasification plant would have been one of the most expensive building projects planned in Northern Ireland and would have processed waste in order to turn it into energy.
Environment Minister Mark H Durkan said: "The NWRWMG project had the potential to make a major long-term contribution to the region's waste management requirements. I believe that the NWRWMG has had to bow to circumstances totally outside its control.
"I am confident, however, that in light of the major challenges which have been presented to both the deliverability and value for money of the project, that the Joint Committee has made the correct decision."
Subject to ratification by member councils of the NWRWMG's recommendation, the next steps for the Group will be to implement contingency plans for ensuring that councils continue to meet their legal obligations for the diversion of landfill.
