Local company receives £26,000 pay-out
The Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) has awarded a £26,000 grant package to local business McNicholas Construction Services, who are contractors to Phoenix Natural Gas Ltd.
The substantial sum was awarded as part of the Gas Proficiency Grant scheme, which is coordinated by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and aimed at training local installers in the installation, servicing and maintaining of natural gas systems and appliances.
David Cooper, Head of Building Engineering Services at CITB said: “There are now over 200 businesses who have received the DEL grant for achieving new Council of Registered Gas Installers (CORGI) registrations through the scheme. The huge growth in the natural gas business has been fantastic but we need to maintain and enhance the number of installers becoming CORGI registered so we can meet the demands of the industry’s future growth. With the grant now available for local operatives, we would encourage as many businesses as possible to come on board.”
Sam Gibney, Phoenix Operations Training Manager commented: “As the natural gas industry grows overall, the shortfall in highly qualified installers is also increasing. Each grant award enables us to build the business in terms of training and expertise and pass this level of quality on to our customers.”

Inter-Ireland Gas Pipe Completed
Significant development of the gas industry in five major towns and cities along the route of the new inter-Ireland gas pipe is expected to follow completion of the natural gas interconnection. Antrim, Armagh, Banbridge, Craigavon - including Portadown and Lurgan - and Newry are all expected to benefit from the gas facility.

Gas Storage To Be Built Under Lough
A £440m gas storage facility is to be built a mile underneath Larne Lough. The development will enable 500m cubic metres of natural gas to be stored in caverns underneath the lough. The new bank will be able to hold enough gas to provide energy for Northern Ireland for sixty days.

Undersea Gas Storage Plan Revealed
Imaginative plans to store natural gas deep under Larne Lough look set to go ahead. If test bores carried out by two energy companies are successful, Northern Ireland Energy Holdings and Portland Gas hope to start storing gas there within a few years if their tests show the area to be suitable.

SSE Airtricity To Freeze Gas Prices
SSE Airtricity has said it is to continue its price freeze for natural gas customers in Northern Ireland until April 2015. The freeze will affect both domestic and small business customers. The announcement follows a half-yearly review by SSE Airtricity and the Utility Regulator.

Economy Minister Conor Murphy has launched the Business Innovation Grant (BIG), a new £4.3 million initiative designed to stimulate innovation and enhance productivity among Northern Irish businesses. The scheme, developed by Invest Northern Ireland and delivered in partnership with Innovate NI, is open to micro-businesses, sole traders, and SMEs.
