Contractor Appointed To Strabane Bridge Project
A contractor has been successfully appointed for the £3.2m bridge project planned for Strabane, County Tyrone.
Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland and Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy have welcomed the news.
The Strabane Pedestrian Bridge project will receive £2.17m from the Department for Social Development, with the Department of Regional Development funding £873,000 and Strabane District Council contributing £150,000. The project is being managed by Strabane District Council and Fox Contracts has been appointed to deliver the Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge, which will link the Ballycolman and Fountain Street/Springhill areas of the town.
Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said: "This significant investment of £3.2m for the creation of the bridge will be of huge benefit to the people of Strabane creating opportunities for two disadvantage communities to forge closer social, business and leisure relations."
Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy added: "The move to the construction phase of the Strabane Footbridge Bridge is a very welcome development. My Department was very pleased to have been able to provide capital investment of some £873, 000 through our Active Travel programme to assist in making this project happen.
"In particular I look forward to seeing the cycling infrastructure which will be put in place as part of this programme. This network of cycle lanes and enhanced footways will provide access to the bridge and encourage walking and cycling in the Strabane area in a safe and attractive setting."
Construction is due to begin in the summer of 2014 and the bridge is due to be finished by the summer of 2015.

DAERA Minister Confirms Commitment to Deposit Return Scheme
DAERA Minister Andrew Muir has reaffirmed his commitment to introducing a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in Northern Ireland. The DRS is designed to encourage recycling by offering a monetary incentive for returning single-use drinks containers. The scheme will cover PET plastic, steel, and aluminium containers ranging from 150ml to 3 litres.
