£13.65m Downpatrick Leisure Centre Approved
A new £13.65m leisure centre for Downpatrick, County Down, has been given the go-ahead.
Environment Minister Mark H Durkan today announced planning approval for the new facility.
The redeveloped leisure centre will be located on the Ballydugan Road. Facilities include a new 25-metre swimming pool, four court sports hall, fitness suite, squash court, multipurpose spa and relaxation area.
Mark H Durkan said: "This £13.65 million development scheme, by Down District Council, is welcome news for Downpatrick, injecting investment in to the local economy.
"It will bring new and improved leisure facilities the whole community can enjoy. This will help to improve health and wellbeing by providing excellent sport and leisure facilities for people in the area."
The Minister concluded: "Decisions like this are helping to deliver a better environment and a stronger economy."

Unite Regional Officer, Michael Keenan, has called on Belfast City Council to put an end to threats hanging over pools at both the Shankill and Ballysillan Leisure Centres.

Consultation events have been announced by Belfast City Council on proposed designs for a number of leisure centre transformations across Belfast. The council is to invest £105 million in a Leisure Transformation Programme (LTP), to be developed over the next 10 years.

Building Work To Start On New Leisure Centre In Co Down
Construction work is to start to develop a new leisure facility in Newtownards, Co Down. The building will located on the site of the Dairy Hall playing fields. The work is due to begin in February and is expected to be completed by the end of 2018. The existing leisure centre at William Street will remain in use until the new facility is ready.

Over 1,600 Memberships Taken At New Belfast Leisure Centre
Over 1,600 people have taken up memberships at Lisnasharragh Leisure Centre in east Belfast, the home of the city's largest swimming pool. The council owned facility was officially opened on Wednesday 18 January after being on 'soft opening' for a month, with hundreds of keen swimmers and fitness fanatics rushing to join.
