Polling Stations Open Across NI
Polling stations have opened across Northern Ireland for today's local and European government elections.
The stations opened at 07:00 this morning, and will remain open until 22:00 tonight. The first count, which will decide the local council elections, is expected by Friday. With the results of the European elections expected by Monday.
Over 900 candidates are competing for 462 council seats across the 11 newly designated district council areas.
It is understood that newly elected councils will only sit in shadow form for the first ten months after today election. This is because the councils are still to decide on their headquarters and governing arrangements.
After the ten month period the new councils will take power in April next year.
Voters will be given two papers when the arrive at polling stations – a yellow ballot paper for local elections and a white one for European.
All voters need is photographic ID, such as a passport, driving licence, electoral identity card or Translink Smartpass.

Voters across Northern Ireland will head to the polls today, Thursday 02 May, in the local council elections. A total of 819 candidates are standing across 11 council areas. 1,463 polling stations are currently operating, with votes being cast up until 10pm this evening.

DUP and SF repeat Westminster election success
As counting in Northern Ireland’s council elections proceeded today, the DUP has virtually repeated its Westminster performance by strengthening its hand in local government. Ian Paisley’s party increased its number of seats with 182 councillors being elected, up 52 on 2001 election figures with a near 30% share of the vote.

Tina The Elephant Dies At Belfast Zoo
An Asian elephant which had been at Belfast Zoo for over 50 years has died. Tina the elephant was 54 and one of the oldest elephants in captivity. A statement from Belfast City Council said Tina collapsed in the early hours of Sunday morning, 05 November. Zoo and veterinary staff made the "very difficult decision" to put her to sleep.
