Orangemen praised for calm conduct at Drumcree parade

Sunday's Orange Order Parade in Drumcree, County Armagh, has passed off peacefully, amid a ruling by the Parades Commission which prevented Orangemen from proceeding down the mainly Catholic Garvaghy Road.

Surrounded by a heightened security presence, around 650 Orangemen and band members attended the event, which follows an annual service at Drumcree Parish Church, which commemorates the anniversary of the battle of the Somme.

A delegation from the parade approached a security barrier put in place at Drumcree Parish Church, and handed a letter of protest to a police superintendent at the barrier. Another Orangeman broadcasted the complaint over a loadspeaker to an assembled crowd of around 1,000 people. The parade then dispersed without incident and the presence of security forces in the area was scaled down.

Speaking after the event, Assistant Chief Constable Stephen White praised the responsible attitude shown by those taking part in the parade.

In recent years, the history of the Drumcree parade has been marred by scenes of violence, following the decision by security forces to block the homeward leg of the parade in successive years.

Recent proposals aimed at breaking the deadlock have suggested consultation between the Orange Order and residents of the Garvaghy Road but no definite action has yet been agreed upon by either side of the dispute.
