SDLP's Nichola Mallon Nominated For Belfast Mayor

SDLP North Belfast Councillor Nichola Mallon is set to become Belfast's first female, nationalist Lord Mayor, after being nominated by her party to succeed Sinn Féin's Máirtín Ó Muilleoir.

It is the SDLP's turn to select the city's next Lord Mayor. The decision is expected to be ratified at the next full meeting of Belfast City Council on 5 June.

Ms Mallon said: "I am deeply honoured to receive the SDLP nomination as Lord Mayor of Belfast and am looking forward to the year ahead in office with anticipation and determination.

"This will be a very important year for Belfast as we continue to progress and promote our city on the world stage. I aim to showcase everything that is good about Belfast; its young people, its elderly and I intend to open up City Hall, making it more accessible to the underprivileged and bringing the Lord Mayor’s role out into the community.

"I pledge to do my utmost for every single citizen of this city and build on the excellent work of my predecessor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir. It will be hard work, but rewarding. I’m looking forward to beginning the hard work."

SDLP Group Leader on Belfast City Council Tim Attwood said: "I wish to congratulate Nichola on her appointment to the Lord Mayor’s Office for 2014 and have no doubt that she will fulfill the role to the highest standards and be a shining light for the people of Belfast in a very important year.

"This is historic, the first female nationalist Lord Mayor of Belfast and, indeed, only the third female Lord Mayor, continuing the SDLP’s promotion of female representation in positions of political authority."
