Documentary Reveals UK Govt Authorised Torture In NI
A documentary broadcast on RTÉ has revealed how torture methods were authorised for use in Northern Ireland by the British Government in the early 1970s.
According to RTÉ, the revelation was uncovered in a memo, obtained by the broadcasters' Investigation Unit.
It is understood that the memo was sent to the then-Prime Minister James Callaghan by the then-Home Secretary, Merlyn Rees, in March 1977.
The correspondence is said to contain details of a meeting between the British Attorney General and his Irish counterpart.
It is claimed that the methods were used on 14 Catholic men, known as the 'Hooded Men', in 1971.
There has been no official response as yet from the British Government over the claims made in the documentary.

UU to offer Documentary Making Masters
