£1,000 Unlocked For Flood Victims
£1,000 is being made available, with immediate effect, to individual householders to compensate for flooding that occurred in the Toome Road and Galgorm Road areas of Ballymena, County Antrim, over the weekend.
A number of homes were flooded due to heavy rain. Properties between Ahoghill and Randalstown were affected on Sunday, while roads in Ballymena were also flooded for a time.
Environment Minister Mark H Durkan said: "Individual householders will be eligible for a £1,000 payment as an offer of practical assistance to those who have suffered severe inconvenience, to ensure homes are made habitable as quickly as possible. It is not a compensation payment.
"If you feel that you may be entitled to the payment, contact Ballymena Borough Council as soon as possible and they will arrange for an urgent inspection of your property. If the council decides that your claim is eligible, you will receive your payment within a matter of days.
"In addition, your council can also offer a range of practical help and guidance, including collection, retention and disposal of damaged household contents, assistance with arrangements to clean up your home and garden, and also by providing de-humidifiers to dry out affected homes."
Alliance Councillor Jayne Dunlop, who is local to the Ballymena area, said the flooding was the fifth such incident in six years, and left many homes without electricity.
"Unfortunately the residents are used to it, the houses have been ruined on several occasions. They have their own sandbags, so they very quickly got the sandbags out and were able to take measures, but they were all out of their houses. Many of them had lost electricity because of the water fusing the electricity and they are just very fed up with it."

£17m To Support Pensioners Affected By Winter Fuel Payment Changes

Emergency funding has been rapidly approved by Stormont Ministers in the wake of the severe flooding which saw almost a month's rainfall on Saturday alone. NI Environment Minister Sammy Wilson yesterday urged householders hit by the recent floods to contact local councils to help access the Executive's emergency payments scheme.

Approximately 50 construction jobs are to be created as part of a £50million project to develop 900 new homes in Comber, Co Down. Northern Ireland homebuilders Hagan Homes has started construction work on the first phase of the 'Enler Village' site on the Newtownards Road, which includes the development of 17 new homes.
