Armagh Farmer Fined Over Animal Suffering

A County Armagh farmer has been convicted under the Welfare of Animals Act after an animal was caused 'unnecessary suffering' while being transported to an abattoir.

Mr William Morton of Navan Fort Road, Armagh, Co Armagh, was convicted at Dungannon Magistrates’ Court on 9 June.

This case arose from the transport of a bovine animal with a broken leg to an abattoir. The DARD Official Veterinarian (OV) at the abattoir inspected the animal and in his opinion the animal was caused unnecessary suffering by the journey. In order to prevent further suffering the DARD vet took immediate steps to humanely destroy the animal. The case was investigated by Veterinary Service Enforcement Branch.

Mr Morton was convicted in his absence and fined £1,000 plus £22 costs and £15 offenders levy.
