McIlroy To Represent Ireland

Rory McIlroy has announced he will represent Ireland at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.

The 25-year-old golfer, from Holywood in County Down, is eligible to play for Great Britain or Ireland, but has waited until now to announce which side he will represent.

At one stage, it was thought the former number one might not participate in the games in order to avoid offending anyone.

He revealed his decision on the eve of the Irish Open, which is being played at Fota Island in County Cork.

It is thought that McIlroy picked Ireland because of the all-island approach within the local game.

He has twice played in the World Cup for Ireland; both times alongside fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell.
