'Don't Wash Raw Chicken' - FSA
The Food Standards Agency in Northern Ireland has warned the public against washing raw chicken before cooking.
Contrary to popular belief, the practice of washing raw chicken before cooking can lead to the spread of germs and cause food poisoning, or even death.
The FSA in Northern Ireland has made the announcement in the middle of Food Safety Week, which runs from 16 - 22 June. It said that washing chicken can cause the spread of a bacterium called campylobacter, which can lead to a dangerous form of food poisoning.
The main symptoms of campylobacter poisoning include abdominal pain, severe diarrhoea and vomiting.
In certain cases, it can lead to irritable bowel syndrome, reactive arthritis and Guillain-Barré syndrome (a serious condition of the nervous system). In very rare cases, it can kill.
Those most at risk from campylobacter are children under five and older people, the FSA said.

A £150,000 support package for several projects promoting the quality of local food - such as the successful Taste of Ulster scheme - has been announced by the Northern Ireland Agriculture Minister Michelle O'Neill. The Minister made the announcement today as she met with one of the beneficiaries of the funding support, Food NI.
