Child Maintenance Payments Increase £3.2m
An extra 731 children have benefited from an increase of £3.2m in child maintenance payments across Northern Ireland throughout 2013/14, it has been announced.
The Northern Ireland Child Maintenance Service said 22,123 children benefited from Child maintenance payments totalling £27.2m.
90% of parents - the highest number ever - are now paying the child maintenance they are due to pay.
The number of parents not paying has reduced from 2,616 at March 2013 to 1,629 at March 2014.
Welcoming these figures, Social Development Minister Nelson McCausland said: "Ensuring parents meet their financial responsibility for their children, so that children get the money they deserve, is a key objective I set for the Child Maintenance Service this year.
"These continue to be difficult times for parents trying to bring up children, every penny counts and it is important that the child maintenance arrangements parents put in place are the best for their personal circumstances whether they are family based arrangements or using the Child Maintenance Service."
Concluding the Minister said: "I remain committed to tackling disadvantage and helping people change their lives for the better. With over 22,000 children benefiting from child maintenance this year we are delivering on this commitment and will continue to do so in the year ahead."

Minister Launches Campaign To 'Stop Robbing Children'
Social Development Minister Margaret Ritchie, MLA has launched a new campaign to win the hearts and minds and get money for children from Non-Resident Parents. The advertising campaign targets non-resident parents who will not pay child maintenance, in a bid to ensure that money will flow more quickly to children.

Parents have less than two weeks to tell HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) their 16-19 year-old is continuing education or training, or their Child Benefit payments will stop. Hundreds of thousands of teenagers will decide on their future this week as they receive their GCSE results on Thursday (22 August 2024).
