RUC 'Could Have Prevented Sergeant's Murder'
The Police Ombudsman has said the murder of an RUC sergeant 37 years ago could have been prevented.
Sergeant Joseph Campbell, a father-of-eight, was shot dead as he closed Cushendall Police Station in February 1977, and in the report published on Friday, the Ombudsman said his death could have been stopped.
The 50-page report found that senior officers, some at the highest level, within the RUC had failed to warn Sgt Campbell that his life was in danger. It said that senior RUC officers had not acted on warnings from junior officers concerning a specific threat that had been made against Sgt Campbell before he had been killed.
For a number of years, Sgt Campbell's family has claimed security forces colluded in his murder with a Loyalist paramilitary. Friday's report does not speculate as to who specifically carried out the murder.
