Derry roads to get £2.3m facelift
A record £2.3 million will be spent on maintaining roads in Londonderry over the next year, it has been announced.
The figure was revealed by Divisional Roads Manager, Dr Andrew Murray as he presented DRD Roads Service’s annual report to Derry City Council.
Addressing the council, Mr Murray said: "The road improvement scheme on the Culmore Road between Garden City and Culmore Roundabout is nearing completion and further schemes are planned at Culmore Road (Bishop’s Corner) and Dungiven Road, Londonderry. Local transport and safety measures are also planned at Sperrin Park, Fernabbey, Temple Park, Glendale and Racecourse Road within the Derry City Council area.
"This investment is possible as structural maintenance spending across Northern Ireland is at an all time high of almost £70 million each year, which is not far off the £75 million envisaged by the Regional Transportation Strategy.
"Just a couple of years ago, the average budget was £45 million which is an indication of how far we have come – although there is still a long way to go."
Dr Murray gave details of some of the schemes that will go ahead as a result of £2,313,000 being spent on structural maintenance in Derry City Council area.
He said: "Substantial lengths of asphalt resurfacing are proposed on the A2 Culmore Road, the B69 Barnailt Road, the C580 Prehen Park and also at Caw and Ballyarnet Roundabouts.
"The scheme on the Culmore Road between Garden City and Culmore Roundabout is nearing completion and a further scheme on the Culmore Road to improve the visibility at Bishop’s Corner is planned for construction during the summer months.
"A scheme to widen Dungiven Road to four lanes between Rossdowney and Altnagelvin Roundabouts and improve the Woodburn junction is planned to start in early 2004."
Dr Murray informed the council that part of the £11.5 million Limavady Bypass is now open to traffic with the remaining work to be completed by September and he added that he was still hopeful of work on the Skeoge Link and Crescent Link dualling starting later this year.
He also revealed there had been a small increase in the budget for local transport and safety measures.
