McCallister To Quit NI21

John McCallister is to leave NI21, the political party he helped create with fellow ex-Ulster Unionist Basil McCrea in 2013.

The deputy leader is now expected to sit as an Independent unionist MLA in the Assembly.

The move follows a row that developed between Mr McCallister and Mr McCrea after the latter announced the party would be changing its designation from 'unionist' to 'other' ahead of local elections.

Mr McCallister then wrote an article in the Newsletter, in which he described the decision as "crazy" and said the party had become "dysfunctional".

Allegations of a sexual nature then emerged against Mr McCrea close to the election count. The party leader denies any wrongdoing but has stepped aside as while the claims are being investigated.

The party's European election candidate Tina McKenzie announced during the vote count that she would be quitting politics.

One NI21 candidate, Johnny McCarthy, was elected as a councillor in Lisburn.
