'Social Unrest' Impacting NI Tourism Industry
A report from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Investment has said that "social unrest over parades and flags" has effected the number of visitors to Northern Ireland, saying that the province has an "image problem".
According to the report, visitors from the Republic of Ireland fell by 7% last year and highlighted that the tourism industry is worried about "continuing sectarianism and racial prejudice" and its effect on trade and investment.
The report, ordered by DETI minister Arlene Foster, said that action is needed to promote "a safe and secure" image of Northern Ireland, while also ruling out a merger between the Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) and Invest NI.
It did however suggest that the two organisations could share an office, while also renaming the NITB either Visit NI or Discover NI.
The proposals contained in the report will now be put out to a public consultation.
The minister said she is particularly keen to hear from businesses across NI, both in and outside of the tourism industry.
