DRD criticised following freak flooding
The Department of Regional Development has been criticised after severe flooding left many Northern Ireland households in ruin last night.
Residents in Counties Down, Armagh and Tyrone said the Department had learnt nothing from previous flooding in high-risk areas following the downpour.
Firefighters were called to Daisy Hill Hospital in Newry after fears of possible flooding on the site while in Rathfriland local residents where caught out by the freak downpour. Castlewellan, Omagh and Newtownhamilton were also affected by the flooding.
However, a Roads Service spokesperson rejected the criticism, describing Thursday night's rainfall as "exceptional", and said that the majority of drainage under their responsibility was operating fairly well. "Unfortunately the sheer volume of water basically overwhelmed the system in a very short time," he said.
People affected by last night's rain are not likely to get much rest bite either with the Met Office warning that heavy rain is expected to affect the whole of Northern Ireland on Friday night.

Counties Antrim, Fermanagh, Tyrone and L'Derry are set to be the worst affected, with flooding of a few homes and businesses likely.

Derry experiences worst flooding in living memory
The Government has pledged to help business and homeowners in Londonderry following last night's floods, described as the worst in living memory. Three hours of torrential rain destroyed many homes, businesses and vehicles in a downpour which left parts of the city up to two feet of water for several hours.

Minister agrees compensation payments for Ormeau residents
Regional Development Minister Shaun Woodward has confirmed that residents in the lower Ormeau Road area of Belfast affected by recent flooding are to be compensated. The compensation, which will be paid before Christmas, comes a day after residents went to Stormont to hand in a petition demanding compensation for the damage done to their houses.

The UK Met Office has issued a 'yellow' weather warning for Tuesday and Wednesday, as Northern Ireland prepares for further heavy showers across the region. "Heavy, and perhaps thundery, showers are expected across parts of Northern Ireland on Tuesday," the Met Office said.
