Tesco to open new Lurgan superstore

Lurgan town centre is to benefit from a new Tesco superstore, according to an announcement by the Government today.

Confirming the nomination of Tesco as the preferred developer for a re-development site in the centre of Lurgan, NIO Minister John Spellar said: “The new Tesco store represents a major boost for Lurgan. Along with the new road it will make an important contribution to the regeneration of the Town Centre. It will also represent a significant addition to the town’s current shopping facilities.”

The Department’s choice of Tesco to develop the site follows on from a development brief tendering and assessment process, which attracted proposals from four potential developers.

The site was acquired by the Department as part of the Lurgan Town Centre Development Scheme and is adjacent to the new £2m distributor road, which was officially opened last December.

Depending on planning approval, the new store could be opened in 2005.
