Man Assaulted Following Vehicle Crash

A man has been assaulted following an incident in which a car crashed into a house and four other vehicles in L'Derry.

Police said four men were arrested following a "disturbance" in Ballymagowan Avenue at about 01:30.

The 23-year-old man who was assaulted has been taken to hospital with injuries described as "serious".

The four men have been detained on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and motoring offences. A fence was also damaged during the car crash.

Catholic Church Vandalised

A Catholic church in Kilkeel, County Down, has been vandalised.

The interior of the church, including crosses, statues, pews and windows, was vandalised during the attack.

The incident occurred in Our Lady of the Angels oratory in the town's Greencastle Street between 23:00 on Wednesday evening and 09:00 on Thursday morning, police said.

A Volkswagen Passat car parked nearby was also damaged and the windscreen smashed in the attack.

£120k Road Improvement Due For Comber

A £120,000 improvement scheme is due to begin at Hillsborough Road, Comber, County Down.

The work will begin on Monday 28 July and is expected to be completed by the end of August.

Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy explained: "This scheme will greatly improve the strength, surface quality and vertical alignment of the carriageway on a 500m section of this important B Class link road between Comber and Belfast Road, Ballygowan."

Women Scoop Top Queen's Awards

The Graduate and Student of the Year categories at Queen's University Belfast have been awarded to women for the first time ever.

Anita Sands, who now lives in New York, holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics and Applied Mathematics and a doctorate in atomic and molecular physics from Queen's. She won this year's 'Graduate Of The Year' award.

Clare Scullion is the winner of the First Trust Bank Queen’s University Student of the Year Award. From Ballygawley in County Tyrone, Clare is currently undertaking a PhD in Physics, expecting to graduate for a second time from Queen’s in 2016.

Catherine Vint, President of the QGA, said: "These prestigious Awards recognise passion and drive in individuals, qualities that help people succeed in life. As President of the Association I am particularly pleased that Anita and Clare – both of whom are strong female role models and scholars of physics – are receiving the recognition they deserve."

Work on Comber Bypass gets underway
Construction work on the £4.9 million Comber Bypass got underway today when Regional Development Minister Peter Robinson cut the first sod on the scheme.
