Learning Support Centre Approved For Newry School
A new Learning Support Centre for pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has been announced for St Joseph’s Primary School, Bessbrook, Newry.
Education Minister John O’Dowd said: "This proposal will provide support for children on the autistic spectrum who cannot cope in a mainstream classroom situation on a full time basis. Instead they will have their needs catered for in a dedicated learning support centre for Autistic Spectrum Disorder which is attached to the mainstream school.
"St Joseph’s has operated a pilot learning support centre initiative specifically for pupils with ASD since September 2013 and it has been regarded as an outstanding success.
"Establishing this class on a permanent basis will ensure a specialist, autism-specific setting is available in the Bessbrook area, enhancing the current provision. On that basis I am content to endorse this proposal."
