Man's Jaw Fractured In 'Hate Crime' Attack

A man has had his jaw fractured during an attack in Ballymena, County Antrim, that is being treated as a hate crime by police.

The man was walking in the Lamont Park playing fields area last Friday (11 July) at about 15:00 when he was set upon by three men.

The victim then went to the carpark and dialled 999 for help.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The three attackers are described as having local accents.

Staff Threatened With Knife In Strabane

A staff member has been threatened with a knife during a robbery at a business premises in Strabane, County Tyrone.

The incident occurred on Ballycolman Avenue on Wednesday at 19:30.

The female staff member was made to empty the shop till and the man then made off with the contents. He fled in the direction of Beechmount Avenue.

He is described as being 5ft 8ins tall and wearing grey hoodie, a white scarf covering his mouth and grey tracksuit bottoms.

Pro-IRA Poster Removed From Memorial

A pro-IRA poster that was placed at a memorial to two UDR soldiers who were killed three decades ago in County Tyrone has been removed by police.

Crosses and wreaths were laid at the scene on Monday evening to mark the death of Heather Kerrigan and Norman McKinley, who were killed when a landmine exploded near Castlederg in 1984.

A short time later, the pro-IRA poster was put up, but was then taken down by police, who are treating it as a hate crime.

Woman Arrested Over Armagh Fuel Plant

A 55-year-old woman has been arrested by police following the discovery of an illegal fuel laundering plant in County Armagh.

The plant was found during a search on Tuesday.

It is thought that the plant would have been capable of evading over £2m in lost duty and taxes.

Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

Man Dies In Co L'Derry House Fire
A man aged in his 50s has died in a house fire in Magherafelt, Co L'Derry An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire at a house on Highfield Road, however police said that they don't believe the fire was suspicious. The man's identity has not yet been released.

Police Cancel Appeal For Missing Omagh Man
Police have said they believe missing Omagh man, Shane Sharkey, has been found in the Republic of Ireland. A police appeal for help in finding the 35-year-old has been cancelled, with police saying they now believe they know where he is. No further details have been released but police thanked the public for their help.

Man Arrested Over Murder Of George Gilmore
A 39-year-old man has been arrested by police investigating the murder of George Gilmore. Mr Gilmore, aged 44, was shot in the neck in Carrickfergus on Monday, 13 March. He died from his injuries in hospital the following day, 14 March. The suspect was detained in Co Antrim on Wednesday, 12 April, and is being questioned at Musgrave police station.

Man questioned about 1988 murder
A man has been arrested in connection with police inquiries into a murder in 1988. The body of Lily Smyth, 66, was found in her flat at Moveen House in Dunmurry on October 9, 1988. The pensioner had been strangled. A police spokesperson said that a 43-year-old man had been arrested and is being questioned at Antrim Police Station.
