Michaella McCollum Returns To NI

Two women convicted of drug smuggling in Peru last summer are to return home to serve the remainder of their sentences in the UK.

Michaella McCollum, a 20-year-old woman from Dungannon in County Tyrone and Melissa Reid, also 20, from near Glasgow in Scotland, were convicted of attempting to smuggle cocaine through Peru's Lima Airport in August 2013.

The two women were arrested at the airport last August after staff stopped them and found 11kg of cocaine, estimated to be worth £1.5m, hidden in food packages in their luggage. The two women were jailed for six years and eight months for attempting to smuggle the drugs from Peru to Spain.

They had initially protested their innocence, claiming they were acting under the duress of threats of violence against themselves and their family, but later reneged on the claims and admitted their guilt.
