NI towns criticised in travel guide
Some of Northern Ireland's foremost towns have been criticised in a leading world travel guide.
The new edition of the Rough Guide to Ireland criticised the likes of Newcastle for its "soulless strip of amusement arcades, fast-food outlets and tacky souvenir stores", while Larne was described as "grim and ugly".
Although over a third of the 28 "things not to miss" in Ireland were north of the border the likes of Antrim, Ballymena were "fairly grim" while Newry had "little to tempt visitors to stay".
However, it wasn't all doom and gloom for the province as the Giant's Causeway and Fermanagh Lakelands were afforded special praise.
While the province's traditional tourist attractions did well in the guide, the Northern Ireland Tourist Board was unperturbed by the criticism. A spokesperson insisted that the province was getting "mostly good press" these days.

Disappointing year for Northern Ireland's beaches
Minister of the Environment Dermot Nesbitt said he was "disheartened" by the Marine Conservation Society’s (MCS) Good Beach Guide 2002 which announced a decrease in the number of clean beaches in the province. Mr Nesbitt said: "Northern Ireland has gained recognition in the annual independent guide with nine recommended beaches.

Guide dog charity open Dungannon Branch
The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association has launched a new fundraising branch in the Dungannon area. With the support of the local community, the new Branch is organising a Dogathon (sponsored dog walk) to take place on Saturday 12th June in Dungannon Park.
