Proposed Mencap Site Damaged In Arson Attack
A former school that has been selected as the site for a new centre for children with learning difficulties has been damaged in an arson attack.
The blaze at the former Newtownbreda Primary School building in south Belfast was attended by fire crews on Sunday night and into Monday morning.
No one was injured in the incident, but the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said it was deliberate.
The site was purchased by Mencap in June and there are plans to demolish the building and build a new support centre for children, young people and adults with learning disabilities.
Mencap's Una Brown said: "While the damage to the building was not as bad as it could have been, especially on such a windy night, we need to secure the site and make a full assessment of the extent of the structural damage before we can move forward with the project. We will continue to keep local residents up-to-date with our plans in light of the fire."

Fires Deliberate
Firefighters have been kept busy over the last few days - most recently tackling a fire overnight at the former Nestle factory on the outskirts of Omagh. It is thought the fire, in which a large quantity of wood chip pellets were burned, may have been started deliberately.
