Pair Convicted Of Benefit Fraud

Two people have been convicted at Newry Magistrates' Court for claiming benefits they were not entitled to.

30-year-old Terence Smith of New Road, Hilltown, claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £4,007 while failing to declare employment. He was given a 12-month conditional discharge, fined £100 and ordered to pay an offender's levy of £15 and court costs of £37.

Eileen McLoughlin, 36, of Upper Dromore Road, Warrenpoint, claimed Jobseekers Allowance totalling £2,971 while failing to declare employment. She was given an absolute discharge, a restitution order and ordered to pay court costs of £46.

Both are also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.

Planning Approval For L'Derry GAA Club

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan has announced planning permission for new facilities at Banagher Gaelic Athletic Association Club (GAC) in Feeny, L'Derry.

The upgrade will include a new two-storey sports and community building. The new facilities will consist of a multi-purpose hall, gym, multi-purpose rooms, changing rooms and storage plus car parking and landscaping in Fr McNally Park, Feeny.

Women Attacked In Belfast Cemetery Carjacking

Two women have been attacked during a carjacking at a cemetery in west Belfast. The women were at Belfast City Cemetery on the Falls Road on Monday at about 15:00 when two men approached, attacked one of the women and took her blue Renault Modus car.

The victim, in her 60s, did not require medical attention. The other woman, aged in her 70s, was not assaulted but was left shaken.

The car was later found burnt out in the Norglen Parade area of west Belfast.

Men Rob East Belfast Shop

Two masked men have robbed a shop in east Belfast.

The robbery began at about 22:00 on Monday evening when the men - one armed with a suspected firearm - entered the Albertbridge Road business.

They made off with a sum of cash and cigarettes in the direction of Glenallen Street.

One of the men is described as being around 6ft tall, of medium build and was wearing a dark-coloured fleece, white tracksuit bottoms, gloves and a baseball cap.

The other man was described as being approximately 6ft and of medium build and was wearing a dark hooded jacket, dark bottoms and dark trainers.

Police Appeal After Man Attacked In Co Antrim
Police are appealing for information after a man was attacked in Ballymena, Co Antrim. The assault happened in the North Road area at around 3.30am on Sunday, 29 January. A gang of four or five men attacked the victim, aged 37. He was taken to hospital where his condition has been described as "serious".
