Sinn Fein soften policing stance
Sinn Fein's stance on policing appeared to soften today after it welcomed news that members of the PSNI will have to produce a register of interests declaring membership of organisations such as the Orange Order.
Fermanagh South Tyrone MP Michelle Gildernew said that "membership of organisations such as the loyal orders or Knights of Columbanus are not necessarily compatible with the need for an impartial police force.
"What we now need to see is progress on outstanding issues, including crucially the transfer of powers on justice and policing to a local accountable assembly," she added.
The measures were announced on Tuesday as part of changes recommended in the Patten Report.
Officers will have to now notify the Chief Constable Hugh Order about membership of organisations such as the Orange Order, the Apprentice Boys of Derry, Ancient Order of Hibernians and Catholic Knights of Columbus.
Officers will also have to declare if they are a member of a group which they believe could call their impartiality into question.

A man is currently in police custody following a dangerous driving pursuit and subsequent arrest on suspicion of multiple offences. The incident began in the early hours of Saturday, 16th November, when police received a report of an assault in the Listooder Park area of Saintfield.

Four Arrested Following Disorder In South Belfast
Four men have been arrested following public disorder incidents in the university area of south Belfast on Thursday, November 14th. Police responded to a number of offences, including resisting and obstructing police, and assault on police. Three men, aged 18, 20, and 21, have been charged and are due to appear in court in December.

Car Catches Fire On A1
A car caught fire on the A1 on Monday, 11 December, after the driver left a blanket on the engine. The driver forgot to remove the blanket after placing it on the engine overnight. PSNI Road Policing officers attended the scene and there were no reports of any injuries.
