Storms leave 1,000 homes without electricity

Approximately one thousand homes were still with without electricity today following last night's storms which caused widespread damage across Northern Ireland.

At one point 20,000 homes were affected by power cuts caused by thunderstorms, however NIE repair crews were able to restore power to most customers by early this morning.

The remaining faults are mainly isolated or “one off” losses of supply, concentrated in the Newry, Dungannon areas.

Robin Greer, NIE’s Communications Manager said: “NIE will be doing everything possible to get the remaining customers back on to supply as quickly as possible. Over 150 NIE engineers and field staff are currently at work on the network to repair the remaining faults."

Last night's thunderstorms were some of the worst seen in recent history in Northern Ireland.

A number of homes suffered damage from lightning strikes while torrential rain affected areas of Counties Antrim and Down.

Meanwhile, a pensioner in north Belfast faced a lucky escape following last night's bad weather.

The 78-year-old woman was found in a state of confusion by a neighbour after a lightning strike set fire to the roof of her house. The resulting fire melted pipes and wires inside the woman's Mount Vernon Lane home.

The woman was raced to the Mater Hospital in Belfast but it is understood that she later discharged herself.

£17m To Support Pensioners Affected By Winter Fuel Payment Changes
Communities Minister Gordon Lyons has announced a £17 million fund to support pensioners who have lost eligibility for the Winter Fuel Payment due to recent UK government changes. The one-off £100 payment will be automatically issued to an estimated 250,000 pensioners in around 170,000 households before the end of March 2025.

Hundreds Of New Homes To Be Developed In Co Down
Approximately 50 construction jobs are to be created as part of a £50million project to develop 900 new homes in Comber, Co Down. Northern Ireland homebuilders Hagan Homes has started construction work on the first phase of the 'Enler Village' site on the Newtownards Road, which includes the development of 17 new homes.

Woman Found Unconscious On Co Down Road
A woman has been found unconscious on a road in County Down. The woman, aged in her 50s, was discovered on the Sheepland Road at around 4.30am on Sunday. She was taken to hospital where she is believed to be in a serious condition.

Remaining Nursing Homes In The North Trust Area To Close
SDLP health spokesperson, Conall McDevitt MLA, has said that today's decision to close the remaining nursing homes in the Northern Trust Area will further fuel suspicions that 'Transforming Your Care' is a charter for the stealth privatisation of the health and social care system in Northern Ireland.

Body Of Missing Woman Is Found
A body found on a beach in Co Down has been confirmed as that of missing woman Aileen Finch. Ms Finch, 68, went missing sometime between Tuesday night and Wednesday. On Wednesday evening (14 January), a body was found on a beach near Ballymartin. It was later confirmed to be Ms Finch. Police have said they are not treating the death as suspicious.
