Work Begins On £85m Omagh Hospital
Works have begun on a new £85m Omagh Local Hospital.
The new hospital will provide for 30 Rehabilitation beds and 10 Palliative Care Beds and will include a range of services such as a 24 place renal dialysis unit, a Health and Care Centre including modern GP Accommodation and an Urgent Care and Treatment Centre. It will also provide advanced diagnostic services together with three day surgery operating theatres and 22 recovery beds.
Health Minister Jim Wells has been shown around the site to see the beginning of the project.
"From 2016 the Omagh Enhanced Local Hospital will provide a range of important hospital services to the community," he said.
"This will cover a number of primary, secondary and community healthcare services appropriate for local delivery to the people of Omagh and surrounding district.
"The new hospital will transform the patient experience for people in the West of the province and will provide a welcome boost for our local economy. I look forward to seeing the hospital’s completion in 2016 and wish everyone involved every success in seeing it come to fruition."
Chairman of the Western Health and Social Care Trust, Gerard Guckian said: " I was delighted to welcome Minister Wells on his first official to the Western Trust. During the visit Minister Wells viewed the construction progress of our two significant capital development projects, the Omagh Local Enhanced Hospital and the Radiotherapy Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital. He also seen the excellent service provided at our Cath Lab at Altnagelvin."

Omagh Acute Care Axed
Accident and emergency services at a regional hospital have today been axed. Tyrone County Hospital patients requiring acute in-patient care, such as those who have suffered a heart attack, area will now have to travel to either Enniskillen or Londonderry.

Virus closes hospital beds across province
Hospitals in Northern Ireland are struggling to deal with the effects of a common virus which has left people waiting on trollies for beds and caused a severe backlog in surgery. The virus, which affects patients and staff, comes as hospitals throughout the province struggle to cope with an increased number of patients because of winter illnesses.

Omagh Hospital's 'First Phase' Approved
This week, the Stormont Health Minister Edwin Poots has announced £75m for the first phase of a new local hospital in Co Tyrone. However, it is not known if the 'business case' for a second Omagh facility will be send soon to the NI Department of Finance and Personnel for approval, as there remains doubts over progress for the next stage.
