One in three children born in Northern Ireland are conceived outside of marriage, new figures have revealed.
The figure was part of statistics released today on the number of births and deaths registered in Northern Ireland in 2002, according to a new survey by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency.
Among the others figures released, it was revealed that Northern Ireland birth's were at their lowest levels ever recorded in 2002 standing at 21,385, compared to 21,962 births in 2001 and 21,512 in 2000.
The number of deaths registered in Northern Ireland saw a slight rise in 2002, with 14,586 deaths recorded. This compares to 14,513 in 2001, however this figure is slightly less than in 2000 when 14,903 deaths were registered.
Using births and population data it is estimated that the current pattern of fertility is 1.77 children per woman of child bearing age. This compares with figures of 2.08 in 1992 and 2.53 in 1982.
