Pipe Bomb Found In East Belfast

A small pipe bomb has been found in east Belfast.

The viable device was discovered during a security alert in the city on Tuesday.

A number of homes were evacuated from the Templemore Avenue area while police and army bomb officers attended the scene.

A controlled explosion was carried out on a suspicious object found at the scene. Afterwards, a police spokesperson said it was a "small, viable pipe bomb type device". It was later removed for further testing.

The alert has now ended and the affected roads have reopened.

Minister Ford Lends Support To Senator Hart's Appointment

Justice Minister, and leader of the Alliance Party, David Ford, has welcomed the appointment of Senator Gary Hart to act as an envoy of the American Secretary of State in Northern Ireland's all-party talks.

In a statement, the MLA said Senator Hart can play a "key role" in the talks.

He added: "I am pleased to see the ongoing interest of the American Government in Northern Ireland. American envoys and representatives have played an important part in the Northern Ireland peace process over the years, most notably Senator George Mitchell who was so pivotal to the signing of the Good Friday Agreement.

"Senator Hart visited Northern Ireland in August, and I believe that he can play a key role in the all-party talks. I look forward to discussing these issues with him when he returns to Northern Ireland."

Woman, 29, Convicted On Benefit Fraud

A woman has been convicted at Dungannon Crown Court for claiming benefits she was not entitled to.

Jolene Coyle, 29, of Culmore Mews in Omagh, claimed Income Support and Housing Benefit totalling £24,685, while failing to declare capital. She was given a 12-month probation order and 120 hours of community service.

She is also required to repay any outstanding money wrongfully obtained to the Social Security Agency.
