£9m funding to battle NI's biggest killers
The battle against three of Northern Ireland’s biggest killers is being boosted today thanks to a £9 million investment from the New Opportunities Fund.
The National Lottery ‘good cause’ distributor has pumped more than £8.9 million into a range of pioneering schemes which aim to reduce the burden of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and cancer in some of the most disadvantaged communities in Northern Ireland.
Lottery grants have been awarded to a range of initiatives including prevention projects targeting sun safety among children, exercise and smoking cessation, projects working to improve access and one-stop assessment clinics for minor strokes.
Breidge Gadd, the New Opportunities Fund’s Board Member in Northern Ireland, outlined the vision behind the scheme. She said: “These projects will play a significant role in reducing Northern Ireland’s health inequalities. I am particularly delighted that we are supporting grass-roots or community based prevention projects, in partnership with Health and Social Services professionals, which are well placed to tackle factors such as poor diet, food poverty and social isolation.
“Another key objective is to improve access to high quality diagnosis and treatment services, for example in remote areas where patients often have to travel long distances for treatment.”
Grants have also been awarded to projects that aim to improve the quality of life of people who have had strokes as well as healthy eating breakfast clubs, schemes promoting fruit in schools and projects aimed at improving people’s cooking skills.
Improving the health of people with disabilities and the homeless will also be a priority and grants have been made available to appoint staff in various health trusts to projects aimed at improving the diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease, stroke and cancer.
