Unemployment Rate Drops In Ireland
Fine Gael TD for Laois/Offaly and Chair of the Oireachtas Jobs Committee, Marcella Corcoran Kennedy, has said that the publication of the latest unemployment figure showing the rate has dropped from 15.1% in 2012 to 10.7% shows that the economy is recovering and that the Government’s plan to create jobs is working.
She said: "The latest CSO Live Register figures show that the unemployment rate has dropped to 10.7% from a high of 15.1% in 2012. Too many people are still out of work, but with the rate falling for 36 consecutive months, we are moving in the right direction.
"In the past month alone, the number on the Live Register has decreased by 4,100 . The number of people signing on the Live Register is now 10% lower than this time last year and stands at 352,647. Almost 80,000 jobs have been created since the launch of the Action Plan for Jobs and the recovery is now broadening across the country.
"Thanks to the sacrifices people have made to get this country to a better place, it is now possible for the Government to cut taxes to help people in work. Every household with somebody in full-time work will be a bit better off from January. We’re committed to reducing personal taxation, to putting money back in people pockets and to growing the economy."

UK employment total rises by 300,000
Labour market statistics released today show the number of people in work is up by 300,000 over the last year. This month's Labour Force survey shows employment growing and unemployment on a downward trend. The number of people in work increased by 28,000 this quarter and is more than 300,000 higher than a year ago – so topping 28.2 million people.

Unemployment Up - But More People Are Working
Although still under the UK average, unemployment in Northern Ireland has gone up again. The numbers of people who are deemed 'economic inactive' has also continued to rise. However, on the plus side, the numbers actually in work rose again by 1,000 to 781,000 over the quarter and 9,000 on the year.

Unemployment Figures Fall Between February And March
New figures have revealed official unemployment numbers have dropped 0.2% between February and March. The Central Statistics Office (CSO) publication states the official unemployment rate has fallen from 6.6% to 6.4%, and from 8.3% compared with March last year.

Slight Decrease In Unemployment Figures
On a seasonally adjusted basis the Live Register total recorded a monthly decrease of 1,000 in October 2012, in the number of people signing on. The standardised unemployment rate (SUR) in October 2012 was 14.8%, unchanged from the latest September 2012 rate, according to the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

A third of Irish businesses will be shedding jobs in 2012, according to an interest group for small and medium sized business owners. Reacting to the increase in the live register figures for 2010, published on Thursday, the Irish Small & Medium Enterprises Association (ISME), called for "job creation and retention" to be given focus in 2011.
