NI Prison Bid For Michaella McCollum
It has been reported that a request from Michaella McCollum, to transfer from a Peruvian jail to one in Northern Ireland, has been approved.
Ms McCollum, 21 and from Dungannon in Co Tyrone, was arrested in Peru alongside 20-year-old Melissa Reid, who is from Scotland, in August 2013.
The pair were preparing to board a flight to Spain when 11kg of illegal drugs were discovered in their luggage. After initially protesting their innocence, the two women entered a guilty plea.
They were sentenced to six years and eight months in jail in Peru, but both requested transfers to a prison in their respective countries.
According to reports, it is understood the Northern Ireland Prison Service is co-operating to transfer McCollum to the region.
Contacting the teenager's solicitor shortly before the Christmas holidays, NI's Department of Justice said the relevant paperwork and protocols had been completed and submitted. They now have to wait to see if the Peruvian authorities will approve the request. The process could take a number of months.
