East Belfast School Closed Over Email Threat

A school in east Belfast has been closed as a result of an intimidating threat sent by email on Wednesday.

Elmgrove Primary on the Beersbridge Road was closed on Friday morning as a precaution, while a man aged 33 has been arrested.

Education Minister John O’Dowd said: "I utterly condemn the threatening communication that was sent to Elmgrove Primary School. To attempt to intimidate any community is unacceptable, but to direct a threat against a school is particularly unfathomable. The Belfast Education and Library Board and the school Principal, in consultation with the PSNI, acted wisely and decisively in closing the school today as a precaution.

"It is, however, regrettable that the children’s routine and learning has been disrupted as a result of criminal activity and I hope that the matter can be resolved as swiftly as possible. Anyone with information relevant to the case should contact the PSNI to assist with their investigation."

Alliance MP Naomi Long said: "I have spoken to the police and have been reassured they are fully investigating a definite line of enquiry.

"I want to praise them for putting extra police around the school, and extend that commendation to the Belfast Education and Library Board and school staff, who took decisive action in handling this situation.

"Elmgrove's closure is only a precaution but it was a wise one to take. The receiving of this malicious communication is deeply concerning and brings nothing but stress and disruption to the children of the school, as well as local residents.

"I would urge anyone with information about this incident to contact police regarding it immediately."
