County Tyrone Farmer Fined Over Pollution Offences
A County Tyrone farmer has pleaded guilty and been fined £1,000, plus £15 offenders levy at Dungannon Magistrates Court for making a polluting discharge to a waterway.
William Potter, Annaghquin Road, Cookstown, Co Tyrone, was fined for the offences on Friday.
The charges related to 3 December 2013 when Water Quality Inspectors, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, inspected the Claggan River at Lisnanane Bridge, Annaghquin Road, Cookstown in County Tyrone and observed grey fungus on the bed of the waterway.
The polluting discharge was traced to farm premises owned by Mr Potter. The length of waterway impacted by the discharge was approximately 700 metres.
According to the NIEA, a sample taken at the time of the incident "confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway."
