Travelling community receive golf compensation
Five members of the traveller community are to receive £1,000 each in compensation after a local golf club barred them from playing on its course.
The case involved Dungannon Golf Club who admitted racial discrimination against the five individuals during an incident in June 2000.
In the settlement the Golf Club apologised to the individuals and admitted liability saying it also accepted that its practices and procedures were unlawful.
Joan Harbison, Chief Commissioner of the Equality Commission, said she was pleased with the decision.
"When people think about equality they often think first about discrimination in job appointments and in the workplace. These are very important, but so too is the right of every person not to be excluded from playing sports, shopping or from a social life just because they belong to a particular group or community," she said.
"Members of the Irish Traveller community are entitled to receive the same treatment as members of the settled community. That means being afforded the same rights of access to leisure facilities such as golf clubs. I am pleased that in this settlement the Golf Club agreed not to discriminate against these."

Man On Trial Over Ear-Biting Attack
A man has gone on trial accused of biting off another man's ear. John Totten, 27, of Milebush Close in Belfast, appeared at Belfast Crown Court charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent. The incident occurred outside of the bar at the Bentra Golf Club, Whitehead, in July 2006.

They will meet with the First and deputy First Minister as well as the NI Secretary of State Theresa Villiers. On Tuesday, 28 June, the Royal couple will visit the Giant's Causeway and also travel to Bushmills in Co Antrim.

Open Returns To NI
The Open golf competition is to return to Northern Ireland in 2019, it has been confirmed. The Royal Portrush Golf Club is to host the sport's oldest competiton for the first time since it was last hosted at the venue in 1951.
