Council Urges People Not To Eat Salvaged Fish
Belfast City Council is urging people not to eat fish salvaged from the Ravenhill Road after a lorry lost its load on Saturday night.
Reports estimate that up to 2,000 mackerel were left strewn across the road at the weekend when a lorry was forced to make an abrupt stop.
Police said the lorry did not stop following the spill, but added it is possible the driver was not aware that it had happened.
A number of local residents were spotted taking to the road and filling bags with fish.
A council spokesperson urged people not to eat the salvaged fish: "We would strongly advise against the consumption of food where you are not clear as to its source or if it is safe to eat.
"In any event, there is a possibility of the fish being contaminated through direct contact with the road, rendering it unfit for human consumption."
