NHS Strike To Go Ahead

A strike by NHS workers in Northern Ireland is to go ahead tomorrow (29 January), despite staff in England calling off their industrial action.

It is understood that while a deal was reached regarding pay for staff in England, such an agreement was not implemented for NI.

Members from the GMB union will be on strike tomorrow. The industrial action for NHS staff will begin at 9am to 9pm, with members in the ambulance service taking strike action for 12 hours from noon.

A majority of Northern Ireland's ambulance workers are members of the Unison union, but the GMB has estimated that around 450 ambulance staff from their union and Unite will be on strike tomorrow. Unison are not taking part in the action, but it has been reported that they are to ballot members over industrial action regarding pay.

Michael Mulholland, GMB regional officer, said: "The response from the Department puts us back to square one. On that basis GMB and Unite members will take strike action tomorrow.

"There is no confirmation that the pay offer for NHS staff in England will be applied in full as has been the practice for over 60 years. Instead we are invited to make reference to it in the discussions we have been offered. There is also no pay offer on the table for 2014/15.

"This is moving the goal posts and is totally unacceptable."
