Pipe Bomb Damages Car In West Belfast

Police have confirmed that a pipe bomb exploded under a car in Belfast.

The vehicle, which was parked on St James's Road in the west of the city, suffered extensive damage in the incident.

The device exploded around midnight on Wednesday.

A number of residents had to evacuate their homes while an Army bomb squad examined the remains of the device, as well as the car. They have since been removed from the scene, with roads reopening and residents being allowed to return home.

PSNI Inspector James Murphy said: "We believe at this stage a device may have exploded or partially exploded under a parked car, causing extensive damage."

The attack has been condemned by local politicians.

Paul Maskey, Sinn Féin MP, said: "Thankfully no one has been injured in this attack. This incident has brought nothing but disruption to the local area and must be condemned.

"Local residents have been evacuated from their homes as a result of the ongoing security operation.

"I would like to commend the local community group, St James' Forum, for opening up their premises to accommodate the residents who have been moved from their homes.

"Those behind this incident have nothing to offer society and are not reflective of the local community. They need to stop these actions immediately and let people in the area get on with their live in peace."
